  1. Kerry county council have started clearing the rail line with out consulting with the people most affected. Planning has not been saught as agreed. A lot of people are now up in arms again over this and any deals that had been made with the people along the line and KCC are now off. An all out blockade is now going to be placed on this by the residents. Good on you KCC you made a pure mess of what ever hope ye had of winning people over.

    1. This proposed walkway has been a fudge from the very start. Begining in Oct 09 full of promises & consultations of which none materialised, and recently attempting to railroad through peoples property showing total disregard for peoples concerns and fears. And all because KCC had not the courtesy or foresight to consult with the people whos lives would be impacted. THIS WALKWAY WILL NOT SUCCEED!!!

  2. The line from Rock Street to Mounthawk must be a priority to enable a completely safe route for kids travelling to school.

    It would lessen the amount of traffic (cars & buses) needed to ferry the kids.

    I am a bit confused here, you come across like Kerry County Council are some evil organisation who are up to no good.

    As far as I was aware Kerry Co. Co. are only facilitating the project on behalf of the Spa/Fenit Residents Committee who were the ones who proposed the project and sought the funding.

    The reopening of the railway has been on both Kerry County Council’s and Tralee Town Council’s development plans for years now.
    I am sure if there was so much distaste for the project objections would have been made when the development plans went out to public consultation ?

    Am I off the mark here or what ?

    The link to Mounthawke is huge, also considering the amount of pupils in the school, but Mounthawke is not the only school that the path would serve, CBS Primary would also link with path via the short link path along side the big river.

    As the line goes through St. Brendan Park, Connelly Park and Caherslee, [and by the CBS link the base of Oakpark] which would mean that not only would the students that attend these schools have a safe route to the school but in most cases it would actually be shorter and quicker that to go by car.

    I am sure it would be a huge improvement to the quality of life to the 1000’s of people who live within reach of this path, to know that they and their children will be able to walk and cycle to school or to town in complete safety.

  4. Delighted to see this old railwy line being put to use for the community. It was very shortsighted that these old railway lines were closed at all. CIE has a dreadful record of ”lifting” old railway lines. It is remarkable that Tralee – Fenit survived at all largely intact. It would be wonderful if Tralee – Listowel – Abbeyfeale Railway line was also reopened as a Walk/Cycleway. What a jewel for tourism in Kerry that would be!

  5. This not entirely related to the Tralee/Fenit walkway but it seems another walk in Fenit Island is now under threat, as a landowner has put up a fence blocking access !

    I am starting to think that some Fenit folk have a problem with the act of walking or maybe it’s just footpaths in general that upsets them.

    Its a pity about both as they would connect and make a lovely walk.

    I hope the rumors I heard that some of the people who are trying to stop the Tralee/Fenit walkway were out protesting against the blocking of the Fenit Island Walk are not true !

  6. I hope CIE dont give the coucile planning to remove the track so da walk cant go HEAD. THERE WAS NO NEED FOR A WALKWAY FROM TRALEE TO FENIT AND THERE NEVER WILL BE I HOPE IT IS STOPPED FOR GOOD. WE DONT NEED IT . WHY NOT OPEN THE LINE AS A RAILWAY AGAIN

    1. If it cant be reopened as a railway lets reopen it as walk and cycle path. I cant wait until its done so i can walk to fenit next sumerr

    2. There is an absolute need to open up access and decent paths and cycleways, This will hopefully be the 1st of many joining towns and villages. The old railway lines are the most logical place to start.
      Those who are objecting should state their grievances clearly if they wish to garner sympathy.

      This country also needs a reasonable right to roam law.

  7. outside observer, those who want to stop it simply want cash, no cash no walk, selfish mercenary and will create a barrage of smoke and mirrors to avoid admitting to tru motivation. so lets pay the ferryman – we walk and pay a toll to every homeowner and landowner within sight of the old rail line, and move on with the pieces of silver in the grubby hands and the greed monster satisfied yet again in our nasty little self centred way where spite begrudgery and two faced values disappoint the decebt among us yet again – OR TRY GIVE FIRST AND THEN YOU WILL RECEIVE?

  8. I am glad the Tralee to Fenit walk and cycle way is not going ahead. it was a bad idea. we dont need walk or cycle ways on former railway lines

  9. The development of the walkway is a fantastic idea and I am sure will be sucessful eventully. It can be seen throuhgout europe that the attitude of the public is swinging in favour of healthy low impact activities such as cycling and walking. Ireland is behind the curve on this but eventully the ignorant, selfserving, missguided troglydytes such as John and George who comment at the start will be ignored and might even some day enjoy a good walk or cycle themselves on it.
