Walk Sunday Oct 23rd

It was great to see so many people of all ages come out last Sunday to ‘Walk The Line’, in spite to the atrocious weather and the three eight foot high barricades which mysteriously appeared and good to see the positivity and good spirits among the walkers !

The Friends of the Tralee Fenit Trailway wish to extend their thanks to everybody who braved the weathe on the day in particular to the politicians who attended, Cathal Foley, Sam Locke, Terry O’Brien and Mayor of Tralee Grace o’Donnel.

If anyone has any photos, it would be great to add them up here, so send them on or add a comment.

Walk the line !

You may have read from Colm’s comment that there will be a walk in support of the Tralee to Fenit pathway taking place Sunday next 23rd of October. It is great to see people come together from different communities along the line, Fenit, Spa and Tralee to promote this great project.

So please come out and show your support, assemble at St. Brendan’s church at 2.30pm, the walk will depart at 3pm to Mounthawk.

UPDATE

Poster and fliers for the walk are available for download, please print them out and spread the word.

Media coverage

The following story was on Radio Kerry on the 27th January, 2011.

Plans to develop the old Tralee Fenit railway line into a path and cycleway are advancing well.
The project, which is estimated to cost half-a-million-euro, has already received funding from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Funding has also been promised by the Department of Transport, Leader, as well as the local community.

The council is awaiting a proposal from CIE regarding the removal of the track, and following that work will begin on the path.

Update of sorts …

In response to those of you seeking an update report, I have been unsuccessful in getting through to Kerry County Council but according to a source in Fenit ‘the work will begin within the next couple of weeks in Rock St but only as far as the Spa, initially for funding application reasons but that the rest would be done as soon as possible next year’. That’s all we know for now. I’m confident it will all come good once everyone’s concerns have been addressed etc.

Minister for Transport intends to fund Tralee – Fenit Greenway !

More positive news, in a recent Dáil question regarding  funding for cycleways Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey indicated his intention to provide financial support for the Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

Since announcing the national cycle policy framework in April, I have indicated my intention to provide financial support to exemplary, demonstration, cycling infrastructure projects in the following areas: the Phoenix Park; Carrigaline; Eyeries; Passagewest, with a link to Rochestown; Crosshaven to Carrigaline; Dublin city, from Portobello to Fairview Park; Galway, comprising the Fisheries Field greenway; Fenit to Tralee; Castletroy; Newport to Mulranny; Westport greenway; and south Dublin, to link Adamstown directly to the Grand Canal cycle path.

Another cause for celebration!

I was at the meeting in Ballyroe hotel last night and I’m happy to report that it was extremely well-attended, respectful and constructive. Personally, I feel that the majority of the people shared the same ground: This walkway will be a valuable local resource for the community, especially children, but should only go ahead once the reasonable concerns of those living near the track have been met. Thus, Vincent Foley from Kerry County Council announced that the walkway is now to undergo a new planning process that involves the public. There was a feeling by some objecting locals that the consultation process had been very poor at the outset, with some believing that the track was simply being pushed through. Kerry County Council have acknowledged this and, by extending the consultation period and urging all those with concerns to contact him directly, Vincent is doing his best to ensure that everyone feels their concerns are now being heard and that a new planning process renders the project more democratic and transparent which is to be applauded.
This project will now go through the following process:
1. A four month consultation period which will address all legitimate concerns.
2. Funding must be secured both to lay down the track and maintain it in the coming years.
3. Part 8 Planning Approval must be secured from Kerry County Council and Tralee County Council.

If the walkway does go ahead, it will start in September 2010 and will take approximately 6-7 weeks.

If I have gotten any of this information wrong, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and put me right.
